Robotech's Back... Again
I bought the original Robotech DVD series back in 2001 because it was one of my favorite shows as a kid. The video quality of the DVDs was pretty mediocre, but it was mighty cool to get to watch it again.
A couple of months ago, I read that Harmony Gold was reissuing the entire collection on DVD in a remastered format with extra content and 5.1 sound. Skeptical I was, but when I saw the first collection (eps 1-12) for under $20 at Best Buy tonight, I picked it up in a moment of weakness, cursing myself the entire time. Having watched a bit of the premiere episode, "Boobytrap," I'm floored.
The real story isn't the video quality which is definitely better than the originals. There's a lot of grain, but it looks about as good as one could imagine it ever did. The amazing thing is the sound, which has been completely remixed and the surround sound just kicks. The sound stage is quite active and additional and enhanced sound effects were added in the remix. It's a really wild perspective on a series I've seen easily a dozen times. I'm anxious to watch it through to see the new footage, but even within the first couple of minutes, there was a new shot of the SDF-1 travelling through the atmosphere.
There's no extras this time, which is fine since I've already got those from the earlier sets and they're for sale at the Web site for people who still want them. The sound just really floored me, though. It's pretty killer.
